LESSON SEVEN:To Boldly Go

2/22/2018

BOLDLY GO LISTEN: Don’t take my word for it, lest you think I exaggerate or deal unfairly with Leonard’s gratuitous ventures, just you try to make it through all two minutes and twenty seconds of the music video The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins. In mere seconds, you’ll be wishing someone would put one of those creatures from Star Trek II in your ear, just to drown out the sound.

MIND MELD: There is occasional controversy about other biases among those on television. Those who study such things found that a change from dispassionate reporting to “humorous and hostile” styles (Hannity, The Daily Show etc.) has increased the amount of bias perceived by viewers. Read Political Interviews: Examining Perceived Media Bias and Effects Across TV Entertainment Formats. It seems that style matters. Say it with me in your best Vulcan monotone: fascinating.

LIVE LONG: Dr. John Day’s The Longevity Plan (2017) will have you exploring the outer reaches of a normal lifespan if you cut out processed foods and sugars, and decrease your stress. Other tips include smiling more and making time to play. Set Phasers to fun!

AND PROSPER:
Thomas Stanley and William Danko’s The Millionaire Next Door: The Surprising Secrets of America’s Wealthy (1996) offers to make those golden years of yours a little more, you know, golden. Spoiler alert: spend less, save more, invest well. Engage Warp Factor ‘thrive’!

KEEP ON TREKKING: The Enterprise travels on in two web series, Star Trek Continues and Star Trek Phase 2, that logically shouldn’t exist, yet here they are...

And CBS recently launched Star Trek: Discovery on its streaming platform. Discovery takes place about a decade before the crew of the Enterprise set off on the original five-year mission, which turned into almost half a century. This franchise has more lives than Spock.

Star Trek: Discovery - CBS Original Series

Star Trek, one of the most iconic and influential global television franchises, returns 50 years after it first premiered, with STAR TREK: DISCOVERY. The series will premiere on the CBS Television Network with all subsequent episodes available on CBS All Access.

To Boldly Play: The Best and Worst Star Trek Videogames

With this month's arrival of Star Trek Online -- the very first MMORPG (or role-playing game of any kind) based on Star Trek -- fans are now able to command their own starship and spend hours in a world they have come to love through decades of television series, movies, and novels.

GAME THE SYSTEM:
Seeking new life forms? Check out www. startrek.com/games for a full supply of games, apps, and even emojis. Or choose from the best Trek themed games of all time. Of course, if you are spending too many hours in other worlds via your computer or game system, you don’t need to get new life forms. You need to get a life.

DON’T BE A KLINGON: A bit harsh, you say? Well, Captain Kirk himself agrees and is even more harsh when he confronts conventioneers and urges them to “get a life” and “grow the hell up.” Beam yourself in to Evil Kirk’s rant courtesy of Saturday Night Live. At least take some of his advice and move out of your parents’ basement.
