LESSON TEN: About Nothing

2/19/2018

HULU LOOP: Seinfeld predates the concept of binge watching, but thanks to Hulu’s $160 Million deal for all 180 episodes, you can enjoy it in one glorious four-day bonanza. Maybe the sleep deprivation will make you the ultimate contrarian, the kind who actually likes the final episode.

Seinfeld

Emmy award-winning "Seinfeld" is one of the most popular shows on the air. Mining his rich comedic resources, Jerry Seinfeld provides a hysterical look at life as a single adult in the '90s. Along with a refreshing cast and top-notch writing, this series is quickly becoming a comedy classic.

DISCLAIM THE ACCLAIM: Unemployed after Seinfeld left the air, Larry David was offered a one-hour special on HBO in 1999. That turned in to a nine-season run for Curb Your Enthusiasm, which is back in 2017 after a six-year hiatus. A quasi-mockumentary about a fictional version of Larry David, CYE gives you the other Seinfeld writer’s take on the minutiae and annoyances of everyday life. If it sounds like a familiar formula, it is. And it still works. Curb Your Enthusiasm is one of the most highly acclaimed shows on television. Which means nothing to a contrarian.

How to build a contrarian NCAA tournament bracket

CLOSE The point of this bracket is to stay away from the popular picks but still give your entry a chance to win. If you wanted to really go contrarian, you could pick all of the 16-seeds to win but that would be ... what's the word for it ...

WORK IT OUT: Want to take home the office NCAA tournament bracket pool? Learn from the 2017 tournament field and USA Today, how to build a contrarian bracket. Of course, a true contrarian would have the four lowest seeds moving forward, which the author points out is “stupid.” So, at best this seems to be a hybrid strategy. Which is why it might just work. Unfortunately, not in 2017 as the simulation picked only two of the Final Four teams and chose the wrong winner. It also failed to pick several upsets and missed most of the other regional finalists. If that wins your office pool, you might want to update your résumé. No organization can last long with a lack of brainpower like that.

LISTEN TO BUFFETT: No, not the Oracle of Omaha, Jimmy, the Parrothead King. Who better to convince you to have a good time and let the world do what it does without shifting between avarice and anxiety? Does our desire to be contrarian come from ignorance or apathy? He doesn’t know, and he doesn’t care. And he’d gladly trade all the daily worries for a fruity beverage and a nap on the beach. Waste away...

GATHER THE FAMILY: Festivus was Frank Constanza’s (George’s father) holiday creation, celebrated on December 23rd. Con- trary to other winter holidays it is distinctly non-commercial, religious, or even fun. Gather around the aluminum pole to air your grievances and then pin the head of the household to the ground. I announce my gripes often, a benefit of being a writer. But for those of you who need to get it all off your chest and then deadlift your uncle, the official guides to Festivus are here.

Happy Festivus is the traditional greeting of Festivus, a holiday featured in the Season 9 episode of Seinfeld named 'The Strike'. Many people have been inspired by this zany, offbeat Seinfeld holiday and now celebrate Festivus as any other holiday. Festivus is celebrated each year on December 23rd.
